Adverbs are words that are used to give more information about verbs. They can be used to describe the action, give more information about the when, where, and how of the action, or to compare actions. Adverbs can also be used to give more information about adjectives (words that describe a noun-a person, place, or thing), or join two phrases together.

Adverbs can also be used as modifying words. They give information about time, place and manner, they can also express a spectators attitude to our evaluation of what is being said. They can modify:

  • Verbs – the car drove slowly
  • Adjectives – the house was very pretty
  • Other adverbs – The mural was painted particularly carefully
  • Sentences – Certainly, the walk will be completed on time

Certain adverbs have other functions. Some adverbs can post modify a word or phrase. e.g. The day before, my trip abroad, someone else.
